“Whatever you can imagine is waiting for you, fully created in the invisible, and the way to make it visible is to harness the force of love by imagining and feeling what you love.”  Rhonda Byrne, The Power

I recently wrote a facebook post about how well-meaning aerobics instructors will say things like, “Don’t blow it tonight and eat all that halloween candy after you worked out!” My aerobics instructor said that recently, and I am sure 75% of the class went home and “blew it”. That kind of motivation just doesn’t work, and there is a reason. It causes people to focus on the negative feeling of “blowing it”.

It feels horrible to “blow it”. Anyone who has struggled with overeating or any addiction will tell you that the guilt that comes with “blowing it” is the worst. It feels like the end of the world, like you are the biggest loser, (and not in a good way like on TV) and it comes with horrible depression and catastrophic thinking.

So why do we want to focus on “blowing it”? I don’t. I want to get over “blowing it” and get over it fast, so it never happens again. The reason I put “blowing it” in quotes is because I don’t even believe there is such a thing as “blowing it,” and I will tell you why.

I gained 60 pounds my freshman year of college. It felt horrible. My body and brain were so messed up. I remember going to the doctor the summer after my freshman year and seeing 194 pounds on the scale (I was about 130 pounds when I left for college).

As messed up as my brain and body were, there was one thing that never changed. I had an inner-knowing that I would lose the weight. I did not even question it. I did not know when, but I knew it would happen. I knew I would get my life together and come out the other side stronger and happier. I had the vision and the knowing.

My knowing was right as always. I lost the weight, and I kept it off. I can’t tell you it was any special diet or plan that worked. I can tell you that it was all about what was in my mind. It was about visualization and creative use of imagination.

I lost the weight slow, over years. One year when I went to the doctor, I had lost 12 pounds. Do you hear that? 12 pounds in a year! That is 1 pound a month! Do not fall for diets that claim you will lose 12 pounds in one month. That means following that diet will also cause you to gain 12 pounds back in one month. Doing it my way it would take an entire year to gain 12 pounds. And you will never let that happen in the course of a year, because if you do it my way, you will think more of yourself that that.

What did I visualize? I would picture myself at a future event, what I wanted to wear, and how I wanted to look and feel. If I had a friend’s wedding to go to, I would picture a glowing and healthy girl in the perfect dress feeling beautiful on the inside and out. I would actually picture and feel what certain body parts would look and feel like when I lost the weight. When you are able to visualize and feel these things, your choices about what to eat suddenly become easy. You learn to listen to your intuition.

Focus and meditate on what you DO want (being healthy and beautiful) instead of what you DON’T want (the feeling of blowing it). Get excited about it. This will change your life. If you do “blow it,” fine. Get back to how you want to feel.  If you have a hard time letting go of that feeling that you “blew it”, ask God for a miracle.  Ask him to reorder your thoughts so you can be at peace and have the mindset that you deserve.

All those times I “blew it” now mean nothing to me. One time they had a hold on me like nothing else. Now I have sent the feeling of blowing it “back into the nothingness from which it came” as A Course in Miracles says. Don’t give “blowing it” any power, and it will have no meaning to you. It doesn’t matter. “All your past except its beauty is gone, and nothing is left but a blessing.” A Course in Miracles.

So the next time your aerobics instructor tries to use negative motivation and tells you not to “blow it” tonight, tell yourself instead, “Love yourself. Love your body. Love your food. And all will be well.”

Peace, Love, and Beautiful Bodies to all,

Elizabeth
