I recently opened my business checking account. As I sat in the bank, I almost felt like a little kid. Who am I really to be opening a business account? You have heard of imposter syndrome, right? Bingo!
The banker started asking me questions about my life coaching business. I started to feel a little awkward and almost defensive. I almost felt as though I was downplaying what I did. It felt like in that 10 minutes at the bank, I took five steps backwards.
I have been working as an independent contractor for years, which basically means I have been working for myself but under someone else. I am about to make the change to work fully for myself. I could not be more excited about it, and I am completely confident that it is going to be so awesome. But when we make awesome life changes, the ego’s peanut gallery likes to chime in. For some reason, my ego decided to do this at the bank. Thank God I was able to quickly get it in check!

I was dressed all cute with my hippie dress, gladiator sandals, and my cute metallic pink purse on my lap. I thought, is this really how a business owner dresses? Would anyone take me seriously?
And then something happened. I changed my thoughts. I thought, “I AM a business owner! And this is how I dress!”
I noticed my previous imposter thoughts had affected my posture, and I was a little hunched over, hugging my purse like I was freezing or something.
But my new thoughts had affected my posture as well, and I was sitting up straight with my shoulders proud. “I actually love being a business owner…It is awesome.”
I started to answer the banker’s questions differently, with ease, confidence, and a sparkle of excitement in my eye.
Then something else started to happen. The banker changed. She started to tell me how we need more people like me out there, and how I am doing such an awesome thing. She even complimented my dress!
In A Course in Miracles, we call a miracle a change of perception from fear to love. If this wasn’t a miracle, I don’t know what is.
I started off fearful: afraid of the banker’s questions, fearful that I would fail, that I sounded stupid, that no one would understand. Then I changed my mind. I shifted to love, love for what I am doing. The cause was my change of perception. The effect was things around me (the banker even) changed.
Start thinking of your self-image at all times. This is different from self-esteem. Self-image is how you see yourself.

Who do you want to be?
- A business owner?
- An author?
- A millionaire?
Start seeing yourself as this person. The Universe will respond.
The ultimate vision is to see yourself as a spiritual being with unlimited powers. This means you do not always believe in your current circumstances. You believe in what is possible. You believe in what you can’t always see. You know you have magic. That magic is working all the time, and it is making your dreams come true. Know this, be this, envision this, and you will become it.
I have.
And that means so can you.
Luis Cavazos and I came up with three steps to manifesting your dreams by changing your self-image.
- Decide what you want.
- See yourself as someone who has whatever it is you want. Know that it is 100% possible. Practice thinking of yourself as that person as often as possible.
- Act – Do one thing each day to become the person that has what you want.
